Local UO grad sculpting her way to fame

Sculptor Alison Brown is working on an 8-foot-tall sculpture of the Oregon Duck

Jennifer Hoff and KOIN 6 News Staff - TROUTDALE, Ore. (KOIN 6) --- A local artist is working on a big project -- literally. She has been given the task of sculpting University of Oregon's newest mascot statue.

"I want to make it right," Alison Brown, 25, told KOIN 6 News in her Troutdale studio.

The artist and University of Oregon graduate has already put hundreds of hours into sculpting the 8-feet-tall 1,500-pound statue. While she said sculpting is her passion, she wasn't always sure it would be a viable career.

"I've always been very practical about getting a job, trying to make money, pay the bills and make it work," Brown said.

The Spanish major said she met a local artist during her junior of college who inspired her to follow her dream.

"There's really no reason why people can't make it as an artist if they're serious about it," Brown said.

Business has never been better for Brown. She's licensed by the University of Oregon and donors as far away as France have bought her famous bronze statues.

Brown said each piece takes her months to make and requires surgeon-like precision -- a career she once considered.

The University of Oregon Duck statue has been in the works for about a year now, according to Brown.

"It'll be cast in metal and people will have it for generations, so if something bugs me, I better change it now," Brown joked.

Brown and seven other artists will gather in her studio Friday to show off their recent work. For information on the event, click here.
