Colorectal cancer—cancer that develops in the colon or rectum—is the third most common cancer in the U.S. Fortunately, colorectal cancer is preventable. The key to beating this cancer is to have regular screenings.
Colorectal cancers generally develop slowly and frequently begin as a growth of tissue, called a polyp, in the lower part of the digestive or gastrointestinal system. Over time, these polyps can slowly change into cancer. If the polyps are found and removed before cancer develops, colon cancer can be prevented.
