Legacy Health Matters – Child and Teen Safety
Is Your Car Safety Seat Installed Properly?

Car crashes are the leading cause of unintentional injury to babies and children. When properly installed, car seats are about 70 percent effective in reducing fatalities and hospitalization for babies. Unfortunately, seven out of 10 kids in child safety seats are not buckled in properly.

Here for You – Every Day

Legacy Trauma Services and Legacy Emanuel Children’s Hospital care for children injured in car accidents every day. We want to help you prevent these injuries by making sure your children are as safe as possible when they travel in vehicles. And, if you are involved in an accident, you can be sure your family will receive the best possible care at a Legacy facility.

Emergency Departments Just for Kids

Going to the emergency room can be traumatic for anyone, however infants and children are particularly vulnerable. That’s why the emergency departments at Legacy Emanuel, Legacy Salmon Creek and Legacy Meridian Park hospitals have separate kid-friendly waiting areas with child-sized furniture. No matter what time of the day or night you need to visit the ED, you can be sure your children will not encounter any unsettling circumstances.

Graduated Drivers Licensing Workshops and Handbook

Oregon law requires new drivers to learn to drive over a period of two years, to allow them to gradually learn the skill of driving safely. Teens become safer drivers if they can build driving experience over time and develop safe driving habits. Trauma Nurses Talk Tough presents free workshops to help parents use the GDL law effectively when teaching their children safe driving habits.

Helmet Fitting Instructions

Helmets can prevent up to 88 per cent of cyclists' brain injuries, as long as they are fitted securely, worn properly and buckled when the rider crashes. However, many helmet users do not secure their helmets level on the head or adjust the straps properly. These easy-to-follow instructions will make sure your and your family’s helmets are adjusted properly.
