Legacy Health Matters – Preventing Stroke
Know Stroke – Know the Signs – Act in Time
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of serious, long-term disability in adults. On average, every 3 to 4 minutes someone dies of a stroke. But stroke is preventable and, if the person receives immediate treatment, the effects of a stroke can be greatly minimized.

Know the Signs of Stroke

Know the signs of stroke: sudden inability to speak, move an arm or leg on one side, facial paralysis on one side and/or severe headache. Because stroke injures the brain, the person having a stroke is not always able to realize what is happening. Even just one symptom may mean a stroke, if it persists

Stroke is Preventable

Although some risk factors, such as age and gender, cannot be changed, many risk factors can be made much less risky through healthy lifestyle choices. Legacy’s web site provides a list of things you can do to decrease your risk of having a stroke.

Quick Response Saves Brains

Quick treatment is the key to recovery if stroke strikes. A stroke victim’s best chance is if someone recognizes the stroke and calls 911. Strokes can cause paralysis, loss of vision, loss of speech and even death. By acting quickly, you may save someone's life and enhance his or her chances for successful rehabilitation and recovery.
