A fast learner: Keizer boy, 7, mastering the Rubik's cube

Wyatt Isom, 7, will compete in a Eugene competition on Feb. 24

Jenny Hansson and KOIN 6 News Staff - KEIZER, Ore. (KOIN) -- On a Saturday over Thanksgiving break, Kaysha Isom headed downstairs and saw her 7-year-old son, Wyatt, had the family computer. He was on YouTube, preparing to master his latest endeavor: the Rubik's cube.

"He just sat there, (doing it) over and over again," Kaysha recalled. "So dedicated, learning how to do it."

Then, 4 hours later.

"I've got it done, mom!" Kaysha remembers her son shouting from downstairs.

Now, less than a month after he mastered it, Wyatt is a celebrity in his Clear Lake Elementary 2nd-grade classroom for his quick-thinking, fast-fingered ability to solve the cube. He dazzles his fellow students, even attempting to conquer the cube's algorithm with his eyes closed.

"I think he's really good at it," one student said as they watched him work his magic.

"He really has a talent," another student mentioned.

"He's been practicing a lot," observed a different student.

The students weren't the only ones who have noticed Wyatt's relentless skill. His father, Chad, has seen it, too -- just like the time he saw his son master walking in a day.

"The cool thing is even once he figured out how to do it he didn't stop there," Chad said. "He wanted to find other ways different designs wanted to do it faster. It was really neat."

Speed will be important in Wyatt's next challenge. He's competing in a competition on Feb. 24 in Eugene. KOIN 6 News asked him if he could thinks he could win. He responded with a simple thumbs up.

Eventually, he hopes to make it to Japan to compete on an international level. And knowing his resume, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him get there.

"He's definitely one of those kids where he sets his mind to something and he's going to accomplish it," his mother said.
