Car careens into living room of North Portland house

Police believe intoxication was a factor in the crash

Kohr Harlan and KOIN 6 News Staff - PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A car ran off Columbia Boulevard and careened into the living room of a North Portland home in the early morning hours of Friday.

Sometime between midnight and 2 a.m., the driver of a Kia slammed into the house at 5435 N. Columbia, creating a large hole that threw aluminum siding and wood framing throughout the front yard.

Candice Keil was inside the home sleeping at the time, but suffered no injuries. The car blew her bedroom door open and debris from her house flew into her room. Initially, she thought it may have been an earthquake.

"I woke up and said 'Hey, wait a minute, I think there's a car in my living room,'" Keil said.

The car ran through the chainlink fence surrounding Keil's house and plowed right into her living room on the corner of the house.

"My grandkids come and they play on that side, so they're usually there playing their video games and stuff," Keil said.

Keil said she came out and saw a woman stuck behind the wheel of the car. According to Keil, she couldn't get out because debris was blocking her door.

Portland Police said the driver was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of a head injury. Police believe intoxication was a factor in the crash.

Cars routinely fly by Keil's house at 60 or even 70 miles per hour. Most recently, a car came off the road and hit a nearby tree.

Keil will be staying with family while her home is fixed. She said she planned to remodel in the near future, and now that project is more urgent.
