2-vehicle crash kills 7-year-old in Jackson County

JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. (KOIN) -- A 7-year-old died and several other people were injured after 2 vehicles crashed Monday night on Highway 140.

Oregon State Police said the crash happened at the intersection of Lakeview Drive in Jackson County at 6:30 p.m.

According to the preliminary investigation, a white Ford F250 pickup was traveling eastbound on the highway. A maroon Scion XB was also traveling east, but had slowed to turn left onto Lakeview Drive. The pickup failed to recognize this and rear-ended the Scion at high speeds.

Officials said the 7-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The 29-year-old driver of the Scion and the 2 other passengers -- a 2-year-old and 14-year-old -- were transported to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for their injuries.

The 23-year-old driver of the pickup was uninjured.

The crash shutdown the eastbound lane of Highway 140 for 4 hours.

Distracted driving is being investigated as a cause for the crash.
