Wrong-way driver killed in Sandy crash

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) --- A 71-year-old Sandy man was killed in a crash on US 26 early Friday morning.

Oregon State Police said the man was driving a 1997 Jaguar Coupe westbound in the eastbound lanes near Rueben Lane when he collided head-on with a commercial tanker truck towing 2 fuel trailers.

The man was killed. He was later identified as Edward K. Alstat of Sandy. The driver of the tanker was not injured.

Detectives continue to investigate what caused Alstat to drive the wrong-way, but believe he may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash.

US 26 was closed briefly but cars were able to get through by 5:30 a.m.
