Driver flees after killing woman in crosswalk

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A woman was struck and killed by a car early Thursday morning.

Portland police said the woman was hit while crossing SE 148th Avenue at Stark Street around 1 a.m. She was walking in a crosswalk and had a walk signal.

The driver fled the scene.

A witness told KOIN 6 News that he was watching TV when he heard a thump. He walked outside and saw her lying on the road.

"It was terrible," Donnie Vannoy said. "It was a sound you don't want to hear again."

Vannoy recognized the woman as a nearby neighbor.

"She was just a little old lady and she lost her shoes and she was by herself," Vannoy said.

Medics determined she died at the scene. The victim was later identified as 53-year-old Yelena V. Loukas of Portland.

The area around the crash was closed to traffic during an investigation but reopened before 4 a.m.

A suspect description has not been released but police believe the car was a white or silver, mid-sized 4-door sedan.

"It is believed that there's probably some front end damage to the vehicle," Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Burley said.

Police are looking for anyone with surveillance video from the surrounding area that might have captured the car fleeing.

This was the second fatal crash in Portland this year.
