Illinois man sentenced in 2016 murder of Salem dad

SALEM, Ore. (KOIN) -- A 22-year-old Illinois man will spend between 25 years and life in prison for the murder of a father who stepped in to help his son during a robbery.

Eloy Carrera Jr. was sentenced for killing Brett White in his Salem home on August 1, 2016. Carrera went into White's home in the 4800 block of Jean Court NE with a shotgun and a pistol to rob marijuana from White's 20-year-old son.

White charged at Carrera and his alleged accomplice, Denzel Hawthorne, and was shot in the head. He died at an area hospital.

His son was not injured.

Carrera and Hawthorne were arrested soon after the shooting at a Woodburn motel.

Charges remain pending against Hawthorne, a 24-year-old Michigan resident. Authorities believe both Carrera and Hawthorne were traveling from North Dakota with drugs when the shooting happened.
