Man accused of running across PDX taxiway, runway

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A 43-year-old man is accused of jumping over a fence at Portland International Airport and crossing 2 active taxiways and onto an active runway.

David Jason Markoe was arrested on Jan. 29, 2018 by officers assigned to the Port of Portland Police Department. He was charged with recklessly endangering, first-degree criminal trespass, third-degree criminal mischief and endangering an aircraft.

Markoe was ordered to appear in court on Jan. 30.

At his court appearance, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office announced that it would not be filing criminal charges against Markoe at this time, pending an ongoing investigation. The case would be reviewed by state and federal officials.

Markoe climbed the fence along Northeast Marine Drive and crossed runway 10L/28R, according to airport police. The F.A.A. briefly closed the runway, but there were not major impacts to any flights.

Markoe was taken into custody “quickly,” according to airport police. He told officers he was “trying to get out of the rain and wanted to book a flight.”

Records show Markoe is from Oroville, California, but he reported being homeless in Portland.

Criminal records show that Markoe has been convicted of 4 felonies, 3 misdemeanors and 6 parole violations.

He has been released from jail.
