Salem passenger, 18, killed in crash after party

Deputies arrested the driver for DUII and manslaughter, among other charges

KOIN 6 News Staff - PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A driver was arrested for DUII and second-degree manslaughter, among other charges, on Saturday after he flipped his pickup truck, killing one of his passengers in the crash, according to Marion County deputies.

Justin Coakley, 21, was arrested by deputies after he was released from the Salem Hospital. He was also charged with reckless endangering and fourth-degree assault.

Karlie Thometz, 18, of Salem was killed in the crash. Another passengers was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Karlie's friend, Tracey George, told KOIN 6 News via email that Karlie had an easy-going personality and was full of life, using an infectious laugh to brighten up any room.

"She wasn't even supposed to go back to Salem," said Chance Holley, who was also at the party Karlie and Coakley left. "But they got impatient and decided to go back anyways."

Brandon Hanneman, another friend, added: "She will never be forgotten. She was a loving caring person that was there for everyone if you ever needed something she was there."

The crash happened after 4 a.m. in the 7500 block of North Windsor Island Road. No other vehicles were involved.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office would like to remind people drink responsibly and have a sober driver if you plan to go out.
