HILLSBORO, Ore. (KOIN) -- A special education substitute who had access to numerous children in the Hillsboro school district was arrested Thursday night in his Cornelius trailer.
Rafael Abinacer, 41, is accused of having sex with a girl under the age of 14, and is charged with first-degree sexual abuse, first-degree sodomy and second-degree sodomy.
"The safety and security of Hillsboro School District students is our top priority," Hillsboro School Districts Communications Director Beth Graser said in a statement released Friday afternoon. "And while there is currently no information indicating that students were involved, our Human Resources department is in the process of terminating Mr. Abinacer's employment effective immediately."
He went through the screening process and was hired by the district on March 18, 2013. He admitted on his application he had a felony conviction for possessing a non-registered firearm in New York City and was placed on five years probation in 1993.
That did not preclude him from becoming a substitute, and he passed a national background check that included fingerprinting.
He was either a special ed assistant or bilingual assistant at Lincoln Elementary for 40 days, and one day each at Jackson Elementary, W.L. Henry Elementary, Eastwood Elementary, Minter Elementary, Minter Bridge Elementary, Brown Middle School, Evergreen Middle School, South Meadows Middle School and Liberty High School.
Washington County deputies are concerned there are more sex abuse victims but do not believe there is a connection with the schools.
A 22-year-old driver who rammed into the back of a Christmas tree truck in rural Clackamas County remains in a coma at OHSU.
The rounds were discovered scattered on the grounds of Wy’east Middle School.
The Vancouver man was charged with drunken driving.
The package was found outside Ticor Title.
