Letter urges senator to jump off bridge for Jesus

"Hector" wrote the letter to the "Saint Johns" neighborhood

Jennifer Dowling and KOIN 6 News Staff - PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A letter that made its way on to doorsteps of an entire St. Johns neighborhood urges an Oregon senator to jump off the Fremont Bridge in the name of Jesus Christ.

One woman who received the letter contacted KOIN 6 News. She did not want to be fully identified, but said the message was disturbing and scared her.

"It's a hate letter, not a prayer," she said. "I think it's terrible."

The letter from "Hector" contained misspellings, including the St. Johns neighborhood. It states Oregon US Sen. Jeff Merkley should walk over the Fremont Bridge and jump off into the Willamette River. The letter then calls for a "grand feast of celebration on Christmas Day" and concludes: "Please accept our humble prayer of  thanks. We pray this in the name of Christ our Savior. Amen."

"It almost makes me cry," the woman told KOIN 6 News. "It is so sacrilegious. Those are words from the Bible and they are using it in context of the demise of someone."

Other neighbors in the St. Johns neighborhood told KOIN 6 New the letter appeared on the doors the same day.

The woman said she wrote a letter to Sen. Merkley about the incident and said she is also considering contacting the police.

"This is not the time to not say anything. This is a time in our political climate when we should speak up in any way we can."

KOIN 6 News reached out to both police and Sen. Merkley's office and have not received any response for comment at this time.
