Inslee in Vancouver addresses hungry kids, homeless

VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN) -- Gov. Jay Inslee met with kids and teachers at Vancouver's Fruit Valley Elementary School Monday, a school where 85% of the students are eligible for free or reduced price meals.

Inslee touted the benefits of a bill he signed last month -- the Meals After the Bell Bill -- that allows kids to eat those meals in class even if they can't make it before school.

"This is this is pretty simple from my viewpoint," Inslee said. "If you're gonna fill a child's head with knowledge you can't have an empty tummy."

A little while later, Inslee met with people at Vancouver's YWCA who are trying to manage the growing numbers of homeless people in Clark County.

The good news is the legislature approved and Insless signed legislation aimed at helping the homeless crisis. The bad news is the supply of housing has still not kept up with the demand for housing.

"We've increased by about 20% our housing trust fund. We have a new law that prevents discrimination against people when they do have a voucher so we've made big strides," Inslee said. "But the fact of the matter is because we have 65,000 people moving into our state because of our hot economy, rents are skyrocketing and more and more people are unhoused."
