Pepe's killer convicted of 1st-degree murder

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- The man who beat a 3-year-old to death at their home in Battle Ground was found guilty of 1st-degree murder.

Ricardo Gutierrez Jr. was arrested soon after Jose Castillo-Cisneros -- known mostly as "Pepe" -- was killed May 23, 2016. In August he waived his right to a jury trial and on Thursday morning, Judge Robert Lewis found him guilty.

Gutierrez lived with Pepe's mother but was not his father. He'll be sentenced February 13 and because his conviction included an "aggravating factor" in the charge, Judge Lewis could sentence him to a longer sentence than normal.
