Grand Jury: Salem officers justified in RV-chase shooting

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A Marion County Grand Jury unanimously ruled that 4 Salem Police Officers were justified in a shooting during a chase with a RV last week. The jury also indicted the driver of that RV on multiple charges.

The chase ended with 4 officers opening fire at the RV near a busy-shopping area on Northeast Hawthorne Avenue. The suspect, Roy Victor Devoursney, 61, rammed multiple patrol cars during the chase.

Those 4 -- Sergeant James Welsh, Corporal Andrew Connolly, Corporal Mark Seyfried and Officer Pence Hodges -- were all placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice in these situations.  Connolly -- a concussion -- and Seyfried --  a broken wrist -- were injured when their patrol cars were hit. They were treated and released at an area hospital.

Devoursney is currently being held without bail in Marion County Jail.

Devoursney was indicted on the following charges:

- Attempted aggravated murder (x2 counts)

- First-degree assault

- Second-degree assault

- Assault on a public safety officer (x2 counts)

- Felony failure to perform duties of a driver (x2 counts)

- DUII

- Reckless Driving

- Fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer

Devoursney will appear in court next on Feb. 7.
