Power restored in after 'significant' gas leak

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A stinky situation in SE Portland left thousands in the dark and forced businesses to close.

A construction crew hit a 4-inch gas main Tuesday night, causing a "significant" leak on SE Foster Road from 101st to 104th, Portland Fire and Rescue said.

"Firefighters came in, they're like 'we need to evacuate' because it was actually starting to smell really bad in there," said Jose Brambila, who had to evacuate from Taqueria el Cazador. "It actually started to make my head hurt a little bit."

Natural gas has a signature smell of rotten eggs.

NW Natural capped the main Tuesday night, but some were still left waiting for service to be restored on Wednesday. At one point, nearly 200 customers were still without gas.

Jill Howdyshell's family took off until the gas was back on.

"When we came back, it was still chaos," Howdyshell said. "We felt like this evening if it didn't turn on, that we would maybe get burgers, so that is how we roll."
