60 Minutes examines Portland's evolution

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- The Rose City will be under the microscope this Sunday on 60 Minutes as reporter Jon Wertheim examines what he calls "a city in transition".

Like the underground restaurants, artisanal shops and indie bands its known for, Portland has had to grapple with the gift and the curse of popularity.

In his upcoming report, Wertheim paints Portland as a city that has evolved faster than its reputation.

"It's known of course as this adorable, precious, handcrafted city, and we certainly saw an element of that," Wertheim tells KOIN. "But (we) also (saw) what's become a full-fledged city and some of the problems and the issues that go with that."

Wertheim's report will zero in on those issues, like homelessness and rising housing costs, while also examining the factors. He says Portland may be a victim of its own success, which is something he witnessed personally.

"I lived there in the 90s but I'm back probably once or twice a year," he said. "I have a lot of friends still there, so I'm still very fond of Portland, very connected to Portland, so this story really sort of resonated with me start to finish."

The report will also discuss the protests and riots Portland engaged in following the election of President Trump.

"People think of Portland as this liberal, progressive enclave," Wertheim said. "We saw a diversity of views. Some of them on the fringes, obviously, but also Portland, I think, is more diverse politically than perhaps people give it credit for."

With the help of Mayor Ted Wheeler, Portlandia stars Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein and lead singer of The Decemberists' Colin Meloy, Wertheim examines whether Portland is the same as the city it plays on television.

You can watch the story Sunday at 7 PM on KOIN.
