Man sentenced to more than 6 years for fatal bike crash

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- The man who was speeding and had alcohol in his system when he caused a vehicular crash -- resulting in the death of a bicyclist -- was sentenced to more than six years in prison.

Kurtis Allen Linn, 24, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count each of 2nd-degree manslaughter, driving under the influence of intoxicants and 4th-degree assault. He was sentenced to 75 months in prison.

On Oct. 8, 2017, investigators determined Linn was driving at 80 miles per hour when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a Ford Escape -- injuring the driver. After he hit the Ford Escape, Linn's SUV spun around and hit 56-year-old Albert Sawdon who was riding his bike.

Sawdon died at the scene. The incident happened near Southeast Stark Street and 212th Avenue in Gresham.

The investigation showed that Linn's blood alcohol content shortly after the crash was .12%. There was also evidence that he had marijuana in his system at the time.

Previously, investigators believed Linn was racing another car prior to the crash. However, after reviewing evidence from a TriMet bus and a separate dash camera video, it was revealed there was no evidence to show he was engaged in a speed racing event.

During Wednesday's sentencing, Linn said he had received substance abuse treatment while in custody. Linn also received a lifetime revocation of his driving privileges.
