PBOT considers paid-parking permits for 2 popular areas

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Two popular Portland neighborhoods are being considered for a pilot program that would bring parking permits and meters to their streets.

Open house information on proposals posted below

The Portland Bureau of Transportation said the neighborhoods around North Mississippi Street and Southeast Hawthorne were selected to move forward in the pilot program process after eight neighborhoods expressed interest.

The idea to ask the public about the program was floated to City Council on Jan 24, PBOT said.

John Brady with PBOT said they're considering the program due to advance residential growth and increased business activity. He compared it the new parking-permit proposal to the system already in place in Northwest Portland.

"These neighborhoods are up and coming," Brady said.

The city is holding two open houses about the program. The first is on Tuesday at the Q Center Auditorium regarding the proposed permits on North Mississippi. The second, focusing on the Southeast Hawthorne proposal, is on Wednesday at the SE Uplift Fireside Room. The open houses will last from 4-7 p.m.

Within 30 days after the open house PBOT will send a ballot to affected residents. A minimum of 50 percent of ballots must be returned, PBOT said, and 60 percent of those must be in favor in order to move forward with the proposed parking plan.
