Portland students march for Quanice Hayes

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) --- Students from Ockley Green Middle School walked out of class on Friday morning.

The students were protesting with Don't Shoot Portland in support of the family of Quanice Hayes, who filed a lawsuit against the city of Portland yesterday over the shooting death of Hayes by police.

The march went for about an hour before students went back to class.

Friday marks the one year anniversary of Hayes' death.

Family and friends also gathered in NE Portland for a vigil Friday night and plans to stage a peaceful protest Saturday outside the Portland Police Bureaus' East Precinct.

"What we want people to see now is our family and a community that's standing together for this young man that didn't deserve to die," Haye's grandmother Donna Hayes said.
