Suicidal man shot by police after firing at officers

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A man was shot by police after they say he shot at them amid a mental health crisis in Beaverton Wednesday afternoon.

Daniel McNamara, 43, was booked into Washington County Jail on May 1 after he was treated for injuries sustained during the shooting. He was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and attempted murder.

Beaverton police said they were communicating with McNamara, who was armed, inside a grey pickup truck near SW Farmington and 148th Ave. for several hours.

The situation started around 11 a.m. McNamara was having a mental health crisis and threatening to harm himself, according to police.

Witnesses said police repeatedly told McNamara to come out of the car peacefully but when he didn't, the SWAT team moved in.

"Then just really quickly, all of a sudden there's just gunshots and we all hit the ground ..." neighbor Erika told KOIN 6 News.

Police said McNamara fired first and multiple officers fired back. No officers were hurt. McNamara was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

Roads around SW Farmington and SW Murray Boulevard in Beaverton were closed during the investigation but have since reopened. St. Mary's and Valley Catholic schools were placed on lockout earlier in the day.

As standard procedure, the officers involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave. There names are:

Hillsboro Police Officer Justin Hubbenette
