'Lucy's stitched hugs' sets a selfless example

Lucy Crouse, 10, is on pace to make 100 quilts for those less fortunate

KOIN 6 News Staff - VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN) -- 'Tis the season for giving.

Vancouver 10-year-old Lucy Crouse, however, doesn't let a schedule dictate when it's time to give back to the community. She never stops. Lucy, who lives with autism, started "Lucy's Stitched Hugs," a charity for second-step housing which provides handmade quilts, pillows and stuffed animals -- all sewed by Lucy -- for those less fortunate.

"She's dedicating her life to that," said Dr. Todd Hillyard, who is Lucy's dentist.

And she's good at it, too, taking only a day or 2 at most to finish a quilt.

Lucy, telling the tale of her sewing past while wearing a "I sew a piece of my heart" t-shirt, began sewing with other kids for people at the hospital. She fell in love with it and the happiness it brought to others. But, she said, the hospital had an influx of quilts. She talked to her mom and found another outlet for her sewing: second-step. To meet the demand for quilts, she and her family made pies for Thanksgiving and sold them, using the money to buy fabric for the future quilts.

Lucy's selfless effect has touched the lives of so many people. She's on pace to make a hundred quilts. On Saturday, Hillyard and the rest of his dental practice decided to flip the script and give back to Lucy and 11 other Vancouver kids. They decided to skip the office holiday party this year and use the money to celebrate their patients instead. They went to Lucy's home, with gifts, games and fabric in hand, knocked on her door and surprised her.

"Lucy is always out helping other people,"Hillyard said, "and we wanted to celebrate and thank her for being so awesome."

Lucy is not only selfless; she's also humble.

"There's a lot of other people making a difference to the world," she said.
