Man in custody after Gresham roof standoff

Nicholas Richards was wanted for multiple felonies

Cole Miller and KOIN 6 News Staff - GRESHAM, Ore. (KOIN) -- Police and U.S. Marshals took a man into custody after a standoff that lasted several hours in Gresham Friday night.

Authorities said the 29-year-old man, later identified as Nicholas Richards, resisted being taken into custody for about 6 hours. Gresham police told KOIN 6 News that Richards was under surveillance by U.S. Marshals but when they attempted to contact him, he ran. After a brief foot chase, he ended up on the roof of a home in the 800 block of NE 178th Avenue in Gresham.

People were inside the home Richards climbed onto, but got out safely. A woman who lives there told KOIN 6 News she had no idea what was going on until police told her to leave.

"We're like, 'oh somebody is on the roof 'and the cop is like, 'oh I think he's right there,' and sure enough he was there," Jessica Jones said.

Richards was allegedly holding a knife to his neck and threatening suicide.

He was booked into the Multnomah County Jail for his outstanding warrants.

Police said he finally threw the knife away and got off the roof. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation but will be in U.S. Marshals custody when he is released.

The suspect is wanted for crimes in California, including a parole warrant for a weapons related charge and burglary.
