Men on the Moon: July 20, 1969

See how CBS News covered the landing and what the Smithsonian has online

KOIN 6 News Staff - PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- The Eagle landed 47 years ago.

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed their lunar capsule at Tranquility Base on the Moon, while Michael Collins orbited in Apollo 11.

Though manned space exploration is currently on hold, it is no exaggeration to say the journey of the Apollo missions transfixed the entire planet.

Here's how CBS News covered the landing that day:

The Smithsonian has also made a high-resolution 3-D scan of the Apollo 11 command module available on the internet.

So tonight, with the sky clear enough to see the nearly-full moon, look up and remember when men walked on the soft surface in 1/6th gravity.
