(PORTLAND TRIBUNE) -- Former Portland City Commissioner Jim Francesconi announced Sunday he is running for Multnomah County Chair.
"With the federal government in gridlock and the state short on funds, it’s clear that local government, like Multnomah County, is the key to protecting our quality of life," Francesconi said in the news release.
Francesconi, an attorney, serves on the State Board of Higher Education. Before being elected to the council in 1997, he was active on the Portland Organizing Project, a church-based social service coalition.
County Commissioner Deborah Kafoury has also said she will run for the position vacated by former Chair Jeff Cogen. Commissioners Loretta Smith and Diane McKeel have also expressed interest in the race.
Dense freezing fog overnight covered much of the city with a layer of frost causing some slippery conditions.

One year ago Wednesday, a lone gunman opened fire inside Clackamas Town Center. On Wednesday night a vigil, held at the Oregon mall to remember those victims, was accompanied by a plea to stop the violence.
Portland police are trying something new -- an experiment they hope will help cut down on crime in areas like this.
