New year, new laws in Oregon, Washington

Some big changes now in effect

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- New year, new laws.

As 2018 begins, there are new laws in Oregon and Washington, including some big changes.

Beginning January 1, 2018:

> The legal age to buy any tobacco or vaping products in Oregon is 21.

> Oregon's 10-cent bottle bill expands to include more than 5000 different brands

> Oregon's new "Move over" law requires drivers to move over or slow down for any vehicle that is pulled over displaying a warning signal of some kind. That includes flares, police lights, flashers, a triangle.

> The speed limit in some residential Portland neighborhoods drops from 25 mph to 20 mph.

>In Washington, workers will see a 50-cent increase in the minimum wage, to $11.50 an hour.

> Washington employers will also be required to provide paid sick leave to all employees.

> Car buyers in Washington will no longer be able to write off the state's sales tax.

The "Move Over" Law

The "move over" law began in 2010 and required drivers to move over a lane when approaching an emergency vehicle on the side of the road. Now, it applies to any driver in distress.

If you can't safely change lanes, slow down at least 5 mph under the posted limit and try to provide as much room as possible between your car and the driver in distress.

"Even though the lane gives you the option, I would ask that people move over a lane if they can," said Detective Mark Povolny with the Washington County Sheriff's Office. "That's always going to be safer, to have that extra space. It gives you time and space to plan for something unexpected."

The fine for violating the move over law is $260.

In Washington state, their move over law only applies to emergency vehicles and tow trucks.
