73-mile Columbia River Hwy State Trail takes shape

COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE, Ore. (KOIN) --- There will soon be a 73-mile uninterrupted stretch of biking and walking trail along the Columbia River.

KOIN 6 News got to see a 2 mile stretch of the trail that will open in 2019, between Wyeth and Lindsey Creeks.

"We're really excited to be able to get them off the highway next to those big rigs that are traveling and to have their own dedicated space," Terra Lingley with ODOT said.

The new trailhead will travel over Mossy Road, which was cut off from the highway and hasn't had cars on it since the 1950s.

The project has been underway since 1986. Workers were able to get a head start after the Eagle Creek Fire caused lane closures on I-84.

"The construction folks were able to get a little bit of a head start and do some work that needed a lane of Interstate 84 to be closed anyway," Arthur Babitz with the Historic Columbia River Hwy Committee said.

When the trail is complete, bikers and walkers will be able to go from Troutdale all the way to the Dalles.
