Hood River implementing parking fees at waterfront

HOOD RIVER, Ore. (KOIN) -- Visitors to Hood River's waterfront will soon notice a change -- a new parking fee in some areas.

The Port of Hood River is implementing fees as the town continues to grow. Costs are rising and people are parking for longer than ever.

"On an annual basis, the Port pays or incurs $350,000 more in costs than we take in revenue, so that deficit needs to be overcome," Executive Director Michael McElwee said.

Officials said most of the waterfront will still have free parking but small portions will charge $2 per hour.

Officials hope to have the new parking meters installed by June 11.
