Stolen Thin Mints leads to help from Dundee community

DUNDEE, Ore. (KOIN) -- Nearly 2 dozen boxes of Thin Mints were stolen from a Girl Scout troop leader's car in Dundee on Saturday -- but fortunately, the community was quick to help after she took to Facebook.

Jessica Fox-Hawney said after a busy day Saturday selling Girl Scout Cookies, she headed back home with her daughters and left 18 boxes of Thin Mints in the car.

"I closed it, locked it, shut my garage, but my daughter came back out later that night," Fox-Hawney said.

Her daughter came out, unlocked the car to get something out and forgot to lock it, so sometime Saturday night, someone stole all the cookies, according to Fox-Hawney.

"It's just so low to steal from kids," Fox-Hawney said.

After the incident, Fox-Hawney took her frustration to Facebook where she vented on her private page.

"That was my vent and then it turned into this huge community support," Fox-Hawney said. "And I'm like 'Now I want to cry because you guys are the best.'"

As a 3rd grade teacher in Newberg, she has a lot of parents who are friends with her on Facebook -- and many of them reached out.

"At least 25 people were like 'We'll buy 2 boxes, we'll buy 5, we'll buy 4,' I'm like 'Thank you all, it was only 18 boxes, but thank you,'" Fox-Hawney said.

Fox-Hawney's disappointment turned into hope after so many community members were more than eager to help. She also said her daughter learned a valuable lesson -- never leave the car unlocked.
