Summer travel season kicks off at PDX

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- The busy summer travel season has started, the Portland International Airport reports.

With most school districts out for the summer, June 14 marks one of the busiest days of the year. June 15, 22, July 23 and August 6 are also especially busy.

Nearly 5.8 million passengers are expected to pass through PDX from June through August, up 2% from last year. More than 70,000 passengers are expected on those peak days.

Port of Portland spokesperson Kama Simonds said the airport expects 1,200 more travelers every day through the summer.

For those worried about the busy season, Simonds said to just plan ahead.

"Things are going to go relatively smoothly, you just have to give yourself time," she told KOIN 6 News.

PDX has recently made some changes, including raising the long term parking rates. They have also removed the last pay phone at the airport.
