Hit-and-run kills pedestrian in N Portland

24-year-old Daniel Ramsey died at the scene

Cole Miller and KOIN 6 News Staff - PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A pedestrian was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on Sunday night in an area where crashes are common.

Police said they responded to the scene and found community members administering CPR to the man on North Fesseden Street.

The man, 24-year-old Daniel Ramsey, died a the scene.

Officers said they learned the suspect's vehicle was a dark colored 2001-2003 BMW 5 series sedan. It will have a broken grill and likely extensive damage to the hood and windshield.

Police believe the driver was going east on N. Fesseden Street when Ramsey was hit and the BMW driver kept driving.

Surveillance video shows the suspect vehicle:

Portland Police is asking anyone with information about this crash should contact the Traffic Division's Traffic Investigation Unit at 503.823.2103.

Ramsey's death is the 48th traffic fatality in Portland this year. The area of Columbia and Fessenden where Ramsey died is also where, in September, a blind man was hit and killed and in late June, 2 others were hurt in a crash.

At a community meeting Monday night, neighbors talked about the problem and how to make North Portland safer.

Neighbors like retired paramedic Ken Geller said it's frustrating.

"It brings back dozens, hundreds of similar situations that I've been in," Geller said. "It brings up a lot of emotion, a lot of old frustrations."

Portland Transportation Bureau Director Lead Treat said $1.5 million will go toward a new crossing near George Middle School, but that won't happen until 2019. A crosswalk with a flashing beacon will soon go up where Ramsey was killed.

"We know we need to do more to make this road safe," Treat said.

There are other hurdles, in addition to work from PBOT and ODOT, the state needs to get involved too.
