Hardesty, Smith to face off in Portland Council race

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Jo Ann Hardesty was the top vote-getter in the race for an open Portland City Council seat in a mild surprise, and will face off in November against current Multnomah County Commissioner Loretta Smith.

Hardesty, who garnered 41% of the vote, and Smith, who grabbed 24%, will be filling the seat currently held by Dan Saltzman, who announced his retirement.

In the other race for a City Council seat, Nick Fish was easily re-elected with 67% of the vote.

Saltzman announced his retirement from the council, which made the race to fill his seat the most-watched city race in the primary season.

Multnomah County Commissioner Loretta Smith was the perceived front-runner throughout the campaign, but the other 5 people on the ballot -- Jo Ann Hardesty, Andrea Valderrama, Felicia Williams, Stuart Emmons and Lew Humble -- all put together strong campaigns.

Fish -- who was diagnosed with abdominal cancer in August 2017 -- ran for re-election and continued his work on the City Council while undergoing treatment.

Fish was elected to the Portland City Council in a special election in 2008, and re-elected to successive four-year terms in 2010 and 2014.

Fish was challenged in the primary by Julia DeGraw.
