Rep. Blumenauer skips State of the Union, holds his own

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Eyes across the country tuned in to watch President Donald Trump's first official State of the Union Address on Tuesday evening.

But not Oregon Representative Earl Blumenauer. Instead of joining the majority of Congress in Washington D.C., Blumenauer was at Portland's Jefferson High School, conducting a different kind of State of the Union. He listened to local Oregonians about what they thought regarding the first year under President Donald Trump, something he said he'd rather hear from them than him.

"People here, even though they maybe tilt a little in terms of the Portland politics, they really want to find ways that people can come together and get things done," Blumenauer said.

"I have been just appalled at some of the things that have come out of this man's mouth."

Blumenauer said he'd like to see the President focus on country infrastructure, something he said there is bipartisan support behind. Even though Blumenauer wasn't watching, President Trump did touch on the topic of national infrastructure in his speech. He called for a bill that would generate $1.7 trillion for infrastructure investment.

"I am asking both parties to come together to give us the safe, fast, reliable, and modern infrastructure our economy needs and our people deserve," Trump said.

But as for the overall climate back in Washington D.C., it's not as bipartisan, according to Blumenauer.

"I will say that people in both parties are dis-spirited," Blumenauer said. "it is intensely partisan, they don't trust each other."
