PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A mother of three young children died and her husband was seriously injured when a suspected drunk driver broadsided her car. A motorcyclist was injured Tuesday night when an allegedly impaired driver ran into him. Sunday night, a Vancouver crash seriously hurt four people after a car crashed into five others at the bottom of a ramp.
The head of the Portland Police Traffic Division said he doesn't know what's behind the sudden uptick in DUIIs, but something needs to be done to stop it.
"It doesn't really follow a formula, it just seems to come in waves," Lt. Chris Davis told KOIN 6 News.
He said most drunk drivers get caught if they've made a habit of it. "The average DUII offender who is arrested has driven drunk like 80 times in the year prior to being arrested."
The other scenario is they're not caught until a tragedy happens.
"Everyday you think about that person," said Bill McCullough, the father of Billie Pugh who died early Sunday. "Everything, her voice, her kindness... Everyone tells me she was the most like me, probably of all the kids."
Her family wants people to really think twice when they drink and to have a designated driver.
Several Clark County school districts closed again Wednesday due to the hazardous conditions.
City Hall will open at its regularly scheduled time, while the courthouse will not open until noon because of a delay in restoring power to the building.
Police are searching for a 9-year-old Gresham boy who ran away from home after an argument Tuesday night. Gresham Police reports officers are concerned because of the boy's young age and the cold weather.
