VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN) -- Clark County Commissioner David Madore is taking some heat for leading the effort to eliminate fees charged for people who use Clark County parks.
In April, new fees to use Vancouver Lake Park and five other county parks went into effect. Some park users and park maintenance workers have complained the lowered fees have led to increased vandalism and more trash being left in the parks.
Madore said county parks are in great shape -- and he says eliminating fees for park use has not hurt them a bit.
"We have a lot of staff in the parks -- we have added staff and ... they're no longer trapped inside their little fee collection booth," Madore told KOIN 6 News. "They're out there where the people are, and that's a good thing."
Madore said money to pay for park maintenance is already collected through property taxes. The extra fees collected to use the park, he said, aren't necessary.

A gasoline tanker tipped and spilled 3000 gallons on Northeast 18th in Vancouver early Friday morning, re-routing traffic and bringing hazmat crews to the scene.
Police are searching for the owner. The home had been the source of numerous complaints from neighbors.
