AJ McCord and KOIN 6 News Staff - PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Oregon State University has named Jonathan Smith as their next head coach.
Smith started 4 years as quarterback for the Beavers from 1998-2001, leading Oregon State to the Fiesta Bowl and a 11-1 record in 2001.
The Beavers made the hiring official after 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. A press conference will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday. There will also be a public welcome rally at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the club level of Reser Stadium.
"Oregon State University is a special place and I have many memories of being a part of Beaver Nation," Smith said in a press release. "I played for some of the best coaches I have ever been around and learned many of the qualities I have utilized in my coaching career."
Cal offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin was reportedly going to be the next head coach, but no official word came from the university. Cory Hall served as the interim coach this year after Gary Andersen was fired in October. The Beavers went 1-11 this season, ending their year with a 69-10 loss in the Civil War against Oregon on Saturday.KOIN 6 News will update this story as more information becomes available.
