Some buildings declared unsafe after Manzanita tornado

There is still plenty of work to be done, but things are improving

Trevor Ault, Chris Holmstrom and KOIN 6 News Staff - MANZANITA, Ore. (KOIN) --- Cleanup continued Monday following an EF-2 tornado that lifted homes from their foundations and split trees in half on Friday.

Terry Booke tells KOIN 6 News his vacation home was right in the path of the tornado.

"The large tree fell across the deck and took out a little bit of the corner of the home," Booke said.

Now he and many of his neighbors are waiting for their insurance companies to assess the damages.

While things have improved since Friday, there is still plenty of work to be done. Local roads have been cleared of debris and piles of fallen trees are gathered on roadsides.

The sounds of chainsaws and woodchippers could be heard all over town Monday as residents worked to get things back to normal.

There is still plenty of work to be done, but things are improving. Piles of fallen trees are gathered on roadsides and the roads have been cleared of debris.

The city is working to determine how building regulations fit into the equation.

"We're down to the technical stuff now. We've got some buildings that I posted as unsafe buildings, and they're going to have to be removed," chief building inspector Doug Dick said. "Now we've fallen into a state issue with the asbestos and the DEQ requirements, so we have to play that one correctly."

In total, 5 buildings were posted as "unsafe" after the storm and 100 others were damaged. For the most part, houses in Manzanita held up surprisingly well.

Power has been restored in homes and businesses still capable of receiving it.
