Police: Ex-Vancouver mayoral candidate shoots intruder

The suspect died from his life-threatening injuries

Chris Holmstrom and KOIN 6 News Staff - VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN) --- A Vancouver homeowner shot an intruder early Wednesday morning.

Vancouver Police said the homeowner -- later identified as former Vancouver mayoral candidate Steven Cox -- woke up to a person in their backyard in the 14500 block of NE 49th Circle. According to police, Cox confronted the person and fired a shot at them after a physical altercation.

The suspect, 30-year-old Ryan Anderson, suffered life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a hospital, but died after arriving. The Clark County Medical Examiner said Anderson was shot in the head, though they didn't specify exactly where.

Detectives stayed throughout the day at the house, as yellow tape encircles what is still considered a crime scene.

Residents who spoke with KOIN 6 News said Cox is a good neighbor.

"He seems to be real nice. He doesn't, he can't hear, he's deaf, almost," said Jim Lindholm. "I learned that one day when I tried to talk to him. He didn't turn around when I yelled at him."

A white truck parked in the home's driveway had several stickers on it, including one that reads, "Combat Veteran" and another with the symbol of the National Rifle Association.
