Freezing fog could slow down holiday traffic

Freezing fog could hit the Portland area Thursday morning

Jennifer Dowling and KOIN 6 News Staff - PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Freezing fog is in the forecast for the Portland metro area -- which could slow down traffic during the busiest time for holiday travel, according to AAA.

Wednesday and Thursday mark the busiest days to travel, and while the weather conditions are good now, the city is ready to spring into action if things take a turn for the worse.

PBOT said they'll have their de-icing trucks out overnight Wednesday and if the freezing fog rolls into the metro area, they plan to add the de-icer to the streets as needed.

Spokesperson Dylan Rivera said crews will carefully watch Germantown Road and Skyline because those locations are 1,000 feet above sea level and freeze more often than the rest of the metro. Although the city and state are preparing for potentially bad weather, ODOT said it's a good idea for the public to be prepared as well.

"Anybody running into snow or ice on the road needs to be prepared. Know what's going on in advance, go to TripCheck.com and obey the chain up signs," ODOT's Don Hamilton said.

Some of the things you should have in your car or truck before traveling for the holidays include snow chains, sand, blankets and non-perishable food. It's also a good idea to have alternative routes ready in order to avoid hilly areas if the roads get slick.

While no more than a few snowflakes are expected Friday in the city, snow and ice could come into the mix Monday and Tuesday.
