Snowfall leads to preview weekend for ski resorts

Winter Weather Advisory in effect for northern Oregon Cascades

Eileen Park and KOIN 6 News Staff - PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) --- Excitement is building this weekend at Mt. Hood Meadows with a preview weekend for those wanting to get in some extra days of skiing or snowboarding before the regular season starts.

Four lifts are scheduled to be open from  9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

"We have four lifts operating, including the Shooting Star Express, the Mt. Hood Express for our advanced riders," Dave Tragethon with Mt. Hood Meadows said. "We'll even run Buttercup and Easy Rider, and our Ballroom Carpet for those who want to learn how to ski and play in the snow."

Tragethon said business has never been better thanks to the incredible snow pack that started building in September. As of 5 p.m. Friday, 13 inches had fallen in the past 24 hours and the snow depth at the base is 38 inches.

"Pass sales are about 10% above where they were last year, so last year was one of our best years," Tragethon said.

Some folks headed up early to enjoy the snow Friday afternoon.

"You feel like a kid when you get up here," Colin Langlois said. "I'm 38 but I feel like I'm 12."

The ski area is scheduled to operate daily starting Friday, Nov. 24.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Cascades until 10 a.m. Friday. Travelers should plan to have chains or traction tires before driving to Mt. Hood.

New snow accumulations could exceed 3 - 6" inches. For the middle of November, snow pack is 200% to 400% above normal for northwestern states.

While mountains will get some snow, the Portland metro area will start to dry out Friday.
