PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Environmentalists are reminding beachgoers to beware of an endangered bird species when visiting certain beaches this summer.

The Western snowy plovers were listed as a threatened species by US Fish and Wildlife Service in 1993 and nest on certain Oregon beaches.

Vehicle and bicycle access to those beaches is prohibited during nesting season.

Officials on Monday said that after the Fourth of July weekend, they discovered a nest with eggs had been crushed by a vehicle.

Camping, dog walking and kite flying also disturbs the nests and is prohibited.
