PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Enough is enough.
That’s the name of the plan to curb gun violence authored by Rep. Earl Blumenauer, who will introduce this on the floor of the US House of Representatives and believes it stands a good chance of passing.
“I think what we need to do is focus on this the way that we have on other major public health threats,” Blumenauer said.
The plan details nine active steps to curb violence from guns, including keeping guns from the most dangerous users to improving the mental health system and increasing product safety.
The plan does not include any initiative to eliminate guns from the community, but restrictions and checks on guns would increase.
Multnomah County Chair Deborah Kafoury believes this plan can work.
“I think we know what works. We know that increased background checks and closing loopholes are supported by the vast majority of Americans,” she said. “I don’t think there’s anybody who’s saying that we should take away people’s guns. This about common sense legislation that will save lives.”
