PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) – New court documents show that a 19-year-old woman who hit and killed a pedestrian in late April as she crossed Southeast Powell Boulevard unlawfully possessed cocaine the day she was arrested.
Miranda Ashley Calvin appeared in Multnomah County Circuit Court Tuesday and was arraigned on a four count indictment that charges her with first-degree manslaughter, reckless driving, felony hit and run and unlawful possession of cocaine.
Gresham Police responded to the crash April 25 just before 9 p.m. at the intersection of Southeast 179th and Powell Blvd. When officers arrived, they found 49-year-old Jerrie Horning dead in the road, according to court documents filed by Multnomah County Senior Deputy District Attorney Glen Banfield. A witness told police that the vehicle that hit Horning was traveling about 45 to 50 miles per hour and that “the vehicle did not appear to slow down” after the crash, Banfield wrote.
The white 2009 Mercedes S550 was found a short time after the crash after a person monitoring the police radio recognized the vehicle and called 911, a spokesperson with Gresham police said. The vehicle was found with heavy front bumper damage and damage to the windshield, Banfield wrote.
Police arrested Calvin April 26 and that is when the cocaine was found, police said.
She entered a not guilty plea in court Tuesday. Her trail is scheduled for June.
Family and friends who attended Tuesday’s hearing declined to comment.
Her bail is set at $262,500.
