The Water…Do Your Part outreach campaign identifies simple things we can do to keep our rivers and streams healthy. Check out the local resources and Do Your Part

Healthy Lawn-Healthy Water

Try these techniques for a strong healthy lawn that won’t harm our local waterways!

  1. Sharpen your mower blades and set to the highest mowing setting to create long luscious blades resilient to the summer heat and keeps weeds at bay.
  2. Over-seed bare spots with a PNW sun/shade mix.
  3. Use a dandelion removal tool to remove weeds by the roots.  If you do use a weed killer—spot spray only where you need it—skip the weed and feed combo products that harm our water.
  4. Don’t promote weeds in your lawn or algae in our local water by fertilizing—wait until fall when lawns need it most.
  5. Use your grass clippings as a natural source of nitrogen by sprinkling on your lawn or landscaping & garden beds.

Pesticides

  • Because pesticides are available at our local garden centers, many people assume they are safe.
  • In reality, these chemicals can pose harm to us, especially our children and pets.
  • They can also kill beneficial insects like bees, which we need to protect our local food supply.  Visit Metro’s Garden Problems page to learn about safe alternatives to chemicals and find out how to identify and remove invasive plants from your garden.  (http://www.oregonmetro.gov/tools-living/yard-and-garden/garden-problems)
