VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN) — At least one Cinetopia location is completely closed as the movie theater chain in the metro area seem to be limiting hours or closing as the company tries to navigate challenges, including a lawsuit involving movie giant AMC.
The original Cinetopia off Mill Plain Boulevard has a sign posted: “Closed until further notice.”
Fans of the theater said if it closed for good it would be a sad loss for the community.
KOIN 6 News tried to get more information on the other Cinetopia locations. An automated message at Progress Ridge in Beaverton directed movie goers to check online for show times. Fandango had no movie times listed. Cinetopia’s location in Overland Park, Kansas only listed show times through May 18.
The doors were locked at Cinetopia’s location at the Vancouver Mall, but there was no sign indicating they were closing.
Court documents show that Cinetopia is currently in a battle with AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. in Kansas. Attorneys accuse AMC of violating the Sherman Act and anti-trust laws by blocking Cinetopia’s access to popular movies, like Godzilla and La La Land.
Cinetopia wants damages from AMC.
With so much uncertainty, customers like Joshua Bambilla and Victor Ramirez are concerned.
“I feel like Cinetopia is really important for the community around here because you get out of school and your friends are like, go see a movie,” Bambilla said. “It would really have an impact, for sure.”
“They’ve always been there and it’s much better than just watching stuff online,” Ramirez said.
