PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — No one was hurt when an SUV crashed into a home daycare center in Southeast Portland Friday afternoon.

Portland police said Jose Antonio Calixto Caras, 28, was driving drunk when he crashed into the house at SE 1155th and SE Alder just after 2 p.m.

Neighbor Keith Waller came running when he heard the white SUV screen to a halt.

“We all heard it slide to a stop,” Waller said. “Hit the house. We all came running down.”

“I was thinking that there were kids under the truck, at any given time during the day there are 16 little kids that are attending this daycare,” Waller said.

Waller said the drive was trying to back up and get away while bystanders checked to see if any children were hurt.

Thankfully, police said no one was hurt, including Caras.

“He was laughing and smiling through the whole thing,” Waller said.

Waller was determined not to let Caras get away.

“I pulled him out, I told him he was under arrest,” Waller said. “I put him on the ground. He wanted to fight a little bit, so I gave it to him and police showed up.”

“He acted like there was no problem the whole time, so it was a little strange,” Waller said.

Police said Caras was arrested on charges of DUII, driving while suspended or revoked, reckless driving and 18 counts of reckless endangerment.
