Mexica Tiahui formed in 1995 to preserve traditional Mexican culture and arts

CANBY, Ore. (KOIN) — The Mexica Tiahui Aztec dance group dazzled spectators Saturday in Canby. The group was there for the final “Sabado en el Parque” (Saturday in the Park) event of the summer.

Students at Oregon State University formed Mexica Tiahui in 1995 as a way to preserve the traditions of indigenous Mexican cultures. Now they perform all over the Pacific Northwest.

Meanwhile, “Saturday in the Park” has been around for about 20 years. It began informally, with a group of people handing out lunches to their neighbors around Locust Street Park. It has now grown into summertime barbecues organized by the nonprofit Bridging Cultures.

Saturday’s performance comes just before the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which honors the culture and contributions of Hispanics and Latinos. Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15.
