PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A barn went up in flames Thursday evening in Canby, officials said.
The Canby Fire Department said crews responded to the blaze at South Mulino Road and South Township Road.
Strong wind gusts carried off sparks from the main fire, causing several smaller brush fires to ignite in the area. It took crews from 5 different agencies to get the flames under control.
Firefighters said the barn, which had been used to store chemicals for a nursery, was destroyed by about 7:30 p.m. but no one was hurt.
“The amount of fire that was in when we showed up, the fuel load and the amount of fire burning was so extreme that we couldn’t get enough water supply on it to actually extinguish it right away,” said Canby Fire Department Division Chief Matt English.
Witnesses who spotted the plume of black smoke helped a woman on the property get to safety.
While no one was hurt, the district remains under a red flag warning, meaning no burning of any kind is permitted in the area.
“It seems kind of early but it seems seasonally things are starting to change and we are getting earlier in the calendar year for fire season so we have already been training,” English said.
